Climate Action

Climate change calls on all of us to step up. Businesses must take meaningful steps to reduce emissions, and we’re committed to doing our part.

Our Climate Action Journey

As a global leader in sugar confections, Ferrara® has a responsibility to rethink the journey from sugarcane to candy aisle in ways that contribute solutions. We have science-based goals to reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, embrace renewable energy, and work with our suppliers on developing low-carbon efficiencies.

Science-Based Goals

Our goals include reducing our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions 54.6% by 2033 from a 2021 base year, which are Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aligned to keep global warming below catastrophic levels. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, such as our manufacturing facilities, while Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions resulting from the electricity we purchase and use in our operations. By focusing on these areas, we aim to enhance resource efficiency and lower our carbon footprint.

How We Will Get to 2033 and Beyond

Empowered by clear-cut objectives, we’re upgrading our facilities and supporting renewable energy to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Facilities

Our manufacturing teams are committed to hitting our yearly energy reduction targets. In 2023, we cut electricity consumption by over 4% through our participation in our utilities’ Strategic Energy Management program. Each U.S. site has an energy champion and team that meets monthly to optimize energy use, and in 2024 we're expanding our energy management efforts to Mexico.

The strategic construction choices we made at our headquarters' Innovation Center earned our lab space LEED Gold certification and improved energy efficiency.

In California, the Jelly Belly® brand has embraced solar power. With the installation of high-efficiency panels, we’re generating up to 1 million kilowatt hours of clean energy annually.

Renewable Energy Certificates

We actively purchase Green-e certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to support renewable energy growth. Investing in renewable energy through RECs is one lever to address our Scope 2 emissions. In 2022, we proudly covered approximately 75% of our U.S. electricity use with RECs.

Education & Engagement

Making inroads requires collective action. We're proud to celebrate our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship throughout the year, but especially in April for Earth Day. During Earth Month, we engage in various activities across our company — from visiting the Climate Action Museum to participating in park clean-ups and making personal sustainability commitments.
